Temple of Dendur

One of the most iconic and beloved works of art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Temple of Dendur was a gift from Egypt to the United States. It is the only ancient Egyptian temple in the United States. Built about two thousand years ago along the Nile River, it was gifted to the United States in 1965. In 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson decided that it should go to The Met.

John Singer Sargent

Italian-born American painter John Singer Sargent is famously known for his painting Madame X, a portrait of Madame Pierre Gautreau, a famous Parisian beauty. He eventually sold it to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Although Sargent painted, showed, and won praise for both portraits and subject pictures, commissions for portraits increasingly defined his reputation.
