About Show
Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical conceived by ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, with a script by British playwright Catherine Johnson. Named for ABBA's chart-topping 1975 song, Mamma Mia, the musical opened in London in 1999 and went on to become one of the longest-running shows on the West End, playing its 10,000th show in 2024. Having played to over 65 million people across 50 countries, the show's legacy in theater history has been cemented, with various renditions popping up including immersive dining experiences and sing-alongs. The record-breaking, award-winning show now hits Broadway, returning to its previous home in the District, the Winter Garden Theatre.
The Story
Mamma Mia! follows young bride-to-be, Sophie, as she approaches her big day with one minor regret in her heart: her father won't be walking her down the aisle, because her mother, a strong, independent hotel owner in the Greek Islands, never told her who he was. As her mother busies herself with preparations, Sophie hatches a plan to uncover the truth of her mother's past, leading to multiple of her mother's exes showing up to the party. Talk about a full house! Will Sophie find her father? Will her mother rekindle an old flame? Will the wedding go off without a hitch?
