We went on the 9/11 Tribute tour right after lunch and then caught the last ferry to the Ellis Island. And then ended the day at the Empire State Observatory Deck to watch the sun set on the greatest city on the planet.

Things to know before booking your Empire State Building tickets

  • Two levels: The Empire State Building has two observation decks: the 86th and 102nd floors. The 86th-floor deck, which is open-air, is included with a general admission ticket. To visit both floors, you’ll need to upgrade your ticket for access to the 102nd floor at an additional cost.
  • The views: The 86th-floor deck offers sweeping skyline views, and you can spot many famous landmarks. However, some barricades might obstruct your view if you’re trying to capture panoramic photos or videos. The 102nd floor, though smaller, has floor-to-ceiling glass windows that offer a clearer, unobstructed view from a higher vantage point.
  • What’s included: All tickets provide access to the exhibits and galleries on the 2nd floor as well as the famous Art Deco Lobby.
  • Visiting during peak hours: Wait times during peak hours can range from 30 minutes to an hour.To avoid waiting in line, choose skip the line tickets. Keep in mind that while these tickets allow you to bypass the ticket queue, you’ll still need to go through security screening*.
  • Sunrise vs. sunset: Sunset is a popular time at the Empire State Building, so expect large crowds. To enjoy the sunset with fewer people around, we suggest booking tickets to the 102nd floor. Alternatively, you can choose the VIP Sunrise Experience which comes with breakfast, coffee, and other delights.
