First floor

When you enter the museum from 53rd street, the first floor welcomes you with exhibits that periodically change throughout the year. Don't miss the must-see ‘Sculpture Garden’, an outdoor space filled with unique sculptures and installations.

Second floor

On the second floor, you will find MoMA's collection of art from 1980 to the present, including special exhibitions, prints, illustrated books, and media. Café 2 and the museum store are also located here on this floor.

Third floor

On the third floor, you’ll find three galleries dedicated to architecture, design, and photography. Explore models, furniture, and everyday objects that showcase innovative design. Be sure to check out ‘Emerging Ecologies’ in the Johnson Galleries which showcases the relationship between architecture and environmentalism.

Fourth floor

The fourth floor is home to the Painting and Sculpture Galleries, which display works from the 1940s to the 1970s. Here, you can find iconic works like Mark Rothko’s fields of color and Henri Matisse’s ‘The Swimming Pool’. Don’t miss Andy Warlhol’s famous ‘Soup Cans’ in Room 412.

Fifth floor

On the fifth floor, you’ll find the Painting and Sculpture Galleries showcasing works from the 1880s to the 1940s. This floor houses masterpieces like Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night and Paul Cézanne’s Boy in a Red Vest. Don't miss Pablo Picasso's groundbreaking ‘Les Demoiselles d'Avignon’ and Frida Kahlo's powerful self-portraits.

Sixth floor

The sixth floor hosts the ‘Cohen Center for Special Exhibitions’. This space is dedicated to showcasing rotating exhibitions, often featuring works from influential artists like Donald Judd. Stop at the Terrace Café to enjoy a meal with a view from the top of the museum.

Lower levels

The lower levels house the ‘The Debra and Leon Black Family Film Center’. This space is dedicated to showcasing the intersection of art and film, with a focus on avant-garde and experimental cinema. You will also find the lower level of the first floor’s museum store here.

Navigating your way around MoMA

Two sets of elevators are located near the museum's entrance. Take the east elevators for access to all floors. The west elevators only go up to the 4th floor. Escalators are also available near the entrance and connect floors 2 through 5.

If you are using a wheelchair, you can use the ramps available at all entrances, and elevators that connect all exhibit levels. There are accessible restrooms conveniently located on every floor.

  • Restrooms: Accessible restrooms are located on every floor except for Theater level 2.
  • Elevators & escalators: High-speed elevators connect all floors, with strategically placed escalators for easy movement.
  • Wheelchairs: Wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis on the first floor, near the 54th Street entrance.
  • Ramps and automatic doors: All galleries, entrances, and facilities are wheelchair accessible. There are automatic doors at the entrances on both 53rd and 54th Streets.
  • Baby-changing stations: There are baby changing stations available in restrooms of floors 1, 3W, 5, and T1.
  • Coat check: You can leave your bags and coats at the entrance of the museum on 53rd Street.

Visitor tips

  • Aim to visit the museum on weekdays or mornings, especially during peak seasons, for a more relaxed experience.
  • MoMA is a spacious attraction with six floors for you to explore. So wear comfortable shoes to enjoy your visit.
  • Art appreciation takes time! Don't hesitate to take breaks in the serene Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, located on the ground floor.
  • MoMA’s staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Don't hesitate to ask for directions or recommendations based on your interests.
  • Don’t carry large bags or suitcases as they are not allowed inside the museum. You will find the cloak room at the entrance of the museum for storing small bags or backpacks.
