The diverse artworks at MoMA have evolved from a modest 8 prints and 1 drawing in 1929 to a collection of over 200,000 pieces today. On the 5th floor, discover masterpieces from 1880 to 1950, including Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Water Lilies. Make your way to the 4th floor for works from 1950 to 1980, featuring The Swimming Pool and Empire. Past Exhibitions

MoMA’s first exhibition which was held on November 7, 1929, displayed the artwork of the four most celebrated European painters — Cézanne, Gauguin, Seurat, and Van Gogh.

Since then till today, this modern art space has hosted 3500+ exhibitions featuring the artwork of global artists and painters including Charles Burchfield, Toulouse-Lautrec, Diego Rivera, Walker Evans, etc.

Some of the most celebrated works that have made their way to the walls of this gallery include the 1931 Henri Matisse show, the first-ever MoMA exhibition devoted to a single artist; a 1939 retrospective of Pablo Picasso, which displayed Guernica, his most famous painting, and the 1955's The Family of Man, which brought together images by photographers from around the world.

Artwork in public spaces

At MoMA, art can also be experienced in public spaces. In October 2019, MoMA displayed six of its artworks on view in public spaces to celebrate its reopening. Featuring renowned works by contemporary artists, these exhibits offer an immersive encounter with form and space. On display are works by German visual artist Kerstin Brätsch, Japanese multimedia artist Yoko Ono, French artist Philippe Parreno, Polish artist Goshka Macuga, and the Israeli-American artist Haim Steinbach.

Look out for Richard Serra's monumental steel sculpture "Equal," located in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. In the museum's lobby, encounter Louise Bourgeois's captivating spider sculpture "Maman," symbolizing maternal protection and strength. Experience how these dynamic installations enrich MoMA's vibrant cultural landscape.
