Exhibitions at the Rose Center for Earth and Space

Harriet and Robert Heilbrunn Cosmic Pathway

This dramatic, spiral ramp encircles the Hayden Sphere and leads visitors on a 360-foot walk through 13 billion years of the history of the universe, starting from the Big Bang to the present day. Along the way, you'll see milestone stages like the formation of the Milky Way and the rise of life on Earth.

  • Featured attractions: A meteorite as old as the Milky Way, a trilobite (the first animal with eyes), a fossilized tooth of a carnivorous dinosaur.

Scales of the Universe

Located around the Hayden Sphere, this series of installations lets you compare the size of the sphere relative to objects ranging from galaxies to subatomic particles. Through visual storytelling and scale models, you’ll get a real sense of how massive, or microscopic, everything in the universe is.

  • Featured exhibits: Stars and their Sizes, Galaxies and their Sizes, Observable Universe, Atoms and their Sizes

Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Hall of the Universe

This hall dives into astrophysics and the tools scientists use to explore space. Interactive exhibits, real scientific models, and engaging visuals explain dark matter, gravity, black holes, and how telescopes peer into deep space.

  • Featured exhibits: Black Hole Exhibit, Planets, The Moon, Galaxies, Stars, The Universe

David S. and Ruth L. Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth

Explore the dynamic systems that shape our planet. From plate tectonics to climate science, this hall is packed with geologic specimens, videos, and interactive displays that explain Earth’s interior and surface changes. It’s a deep dive into Earth sciences from the planet’s birth to present-day concerns like climate change and sustainability.

  • Featured exhibits: Dynamic Earth, How Has the Earth Evolved?, Climate Change exhibit

Hayden Big Bang Theater

Located inside the Hayden Sphere, this darkened dome theater immerses you in the origins of the universe. The show begins with a dramatic re-creation of the Big Bang and takes you through the formation of galaxies, stars, and our solar system. It’s short, powerful, and visually stunning.

  • Featured exhibit: Big Bang Theater Presentation

Hayden Planetarium

One of the most advanced space theaters in the world. Hosted by renowned scientists (like Neil deGrasse Tyson), the planetarium features rotating shows about space, black holes, cosmic collisions, and dark matter. These are visual, science-based storytelling experiences shown on a massive panoramic dome screen for a 360-degree viewing experience.

  • Featured exhibit: Encounters in the Milky Way: Space Show
